Ballistic - quite true.
The "pioneer from finish of school" advice was interpreted exactly the same way in New Zealand as you describe it happening in the UK:
- only the school leaving age was 15!
clarification needed about us education system and watchtower policy :-.
we used to be slightly puzzled by some articles printed in the publications such as "young people ask - should i go to school?".
because in england and most of the uk, school is most definately compolsory and enforcable by law up to age 16.. further education beyond age 16 is never refered to as "school" except jokingly.

i have been out of the witness religion since the 1990's and i see from reading former witness sites that it is common for people to do something i used to do.
which was that i made a big deal out of all the wrong things the witnesses did and do.
i thought it was some how my responsiblity to tell others when i had the chance, and even when i made the chance, about all the things i knew.
As qcmbr mentions, there are such things as basic, universal principles - such as the one quoted as an example.
These principles are common to all the world's major, enduring religions. (Not that you need to be a religo in order to be principled - I am not that silly as to suggest that!)
In other words, in the areas where the JWs are right - they don't have the monopoly these, either (like they evidently think they do!)
has anyone else noticed how more and more in studies and other articles the wt no longer sticks only to the bible as its authority?.
they criticised the rc for quoting the catechism to settle matters of doctrine, yet more and more i notice points 'proved' by:.
"note what the watchtower says".
Well - they will tell you that the Watchtower is "more important than the bible":
- After all, "Christendom" has been reading the bible for centuries, and "it hasn't done them any good."
That's the party line, anyway!

True enough:
The WTS, though, seems to think that it is the only religious group that is allowed to be "wrong" - and yet still somehow at the same time be "right"!
After all, surely:
1)The "worldwide preaching work"
2) The "love that they have among themselves" - as evidenced by their not killing each other in wars.
furnishes the evidence that God is using them, and nobody else!
Further to the previous writer's comments, I came to the conclusion at the same time as I broke with the JWs - #$%& all religion!
clarification needed about us education system and watchtower policy :-.

Further to Blondie's comments about the WTS concerned about how attending university places ones faith at risk:
- This just shows how narrow minded the WTS is.
- i.e University will damage a kid's faith, but supposedly learning a practical trade by means of on the job training will not . (I well remember the stern warning I received from the elders when I was about to complete high school - about what universities are like "these days").
- The reality is, a young person will encounter just as many challenges to their "faith" while undergoing on the job training, as they will encounter at university.
e.g Hard drinking workmates, pornography on open display, loose women (anything I haven't missed here?)
I know - been there and done that!
i came across this today and thought it was interesting.
i'm new here to the board and it might be something you guys already know about but if your interested here is the link.

The fact is that both Russell and Rutherford would be booted out today if they were still around:
- Russell for reasons already stated.
- Rutherford for his fondness of fine cigars!
Whatever - what difference does it make. Both ruled an empire founded on BS!
i remember spanking my son when we used to attend meetings and conventions because he cried and just wouln't sit still.
i was told that he had to be disciplined so he would learn to behave and learn what was being said from the platform.
now that i look back i realize that that was child abuse and i feel so horrible about it.do you feel guilty for spanking your kids during meetings and conventions?
Expecting a child to sit still for two hours during a meeting - and for longer at an Assembly - is straight out insanity!
And as for belting them for not sitting still .....unimaginable stupidity.
All I can say is no wonder most JW youth give the whole thing away just as soon as they are able to.
richierich posted something about how odd witness kids parties were and it reminded me of being reinstated.
i never quite fit when i got back in.
i would sit in the car groups and think...are these people for real?
I got plenty of cold shunning while I was still with the JWs.
What was that about "having love among themselves" if they are true believers?
so it has become habit for me to go out of my way when driving to make sure i can give it the finger as i drive by.
i especially like to do this on the way to one of my favorite bars, especially on meeting nights just so people who knew me can see me do it.
i don't know why, but this has become a tradition of sorts.
I readily admit to feeling good whenever I give KH the two fingered salute - something I do everytime I go past.
.
i know people have left for people issues but what about jehovah god and jesus?
what have they done?.
"Jehovah" as described by the WTS - NO!!!
Then most ... cked up creature imaginable!
PS: The SAME FOR ALL RELIGION
